Earthbound

Ceramic work by 11 contemporary artists
March 19 – April 19, 2026
Reception and Artists’ Talk: Thursday, March 19, 5 – 6:30
(Artists’ Talk at 5:30)

The Schick Art Gallery presents Earthbound, ceramic works by eleven contemporary artists, curated
by Skidmore Associate Professor of Ceramics Matthew Wilt with an eye to exposing students to a
wide range of techniques and aesthetic visions. From figurative to abstract and from functional to
fantastic, Earthbound presents clay work at the highest level of craftsmanship and invention.

The bright colors of Kyle Johns’ ceramic sculpture transition smoothly from one hue to another
within each piece. Employing a process of mold-making common in industrial production, Johns
then deconstructs and reassembles plaster mold positives to create new forms, using color to
accentuate. He states that his work exists â€˜in the grey area between vessel and sculpture.’

Pattie Chalmers’ arrangements of familiar tools re-created in clay feel both humble and
ingenious. Chalmers renders the utilitarian objects named in Martha Rosler's 1975 feminist video,
Semiotics of the Kitchen, as they would be found in her own mother's kitchen. For Chalmers, the
piece is â€˜a portrait of my mother, a reflection on my past, and a love note to Rosler.’

Through his rich surfaces, Benjie Heu states that he aims to transform the â€˜often overlooked
anxieties of everyday life…into figures or obstacles to be faced by the viewer.’ His graffitied, obsessively adorned, droll characters have titles such as Hooligan, Con Man, and Riff
Raff.

This sampling suggests the range of works on view. The full list of Earthbound artists is: Bekah Bliss,
Pattie Chalmers, Judy Fox, Brett Freund, Arthur Gonzalez, Brian Harper, Benjie Heu, Kyle Johns,
Linda Lopez, Chris Staley, and Shoko Teruyama. Artists Judy Fox and Benjie Heu will participate in the Artists’ Talk on March 19 at 5:30 p.m.
